Dr. Antoinette Izzo is a PhD candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, where she is currently research the reproduction of toxic masculinity in military culture. A bit of an intellectual nomad, she has researched and specialized in an array of topics related to human behavior—sexuality and culture, language and communication, human bonding strategies, social construction of intimate relationships, military personnel, embodiment of military conflict, nontraditional relationship dynamics (e.g., polyamory, BDSM), emotional intelligence and identity, and erotic entrepreneurship.

Her work regularly focuses on "fringe" and outsider populations, and she is proud to be an open and honest spokesperson for the “taboo” topics that are all-too-often avoided or overlooked in public discourse.

Antoinette is also service-connected Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) veteran currently with 18 years in the enlisted Marine Corps. Her personal experiences with PTSD, mild TBI, and Military Sexual Trauma have fueled both her academic and professional pursuits around the topics of sexuality and intimacy.

In 2012, Antoinette identified a major deficit in the treatment and rehabilitation of America’s heroes: resources exist to treat most physical and mental wounds, but sexuality and intimacy concerns remain the “elephant in the bedroom”—a taboo topic that consistently gets left out of integrative treatment—for most wounded warriors. In 2014, she formed the Warrior Intimacy Institute in order to provide sexuality and intimacy resources specifically to wounded service members and their partners. Antoinette is passionate about addressing the debilitating effects of visible and invisible wounds not only on physical sexual activity, but also on forming intimate connections with others.

Antoinette’s regionally-accredited education includes a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Human Behavior, a Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in Cultural Anthropology, and a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in English. Her formal, state-accredited education includes a Doctorate in Human Sexuality (D.H.S.). She is also a board-certified sexologist and holds additional board certifications including Master Practitioner and Trainer of Neuro-Linguistic Programming, and Master Practitioner and Trainer of Hypnotherapy. She also holds certificates in Sex Education, Clinical Sexology, Sexological Instructor/Advisor of AIDS/STI Prevention, Erotology, and is a Level 1 facilitator of Practical Application of Intimate Relationship Skills (PAIRS) workshops (www.pairs.org).
